Understanding the OCVL's Ladder System

Quick Summary

Teams are broken down throughout each Division into groups (brackets) of 4 teams playing a 2 week cycle.

On Week 1 of the cycle: Team 1 plays Team 2
Team 3 plays Team 4
On Week 2 of the cycle: The winners from Week 1 play. The winner (Week 2) moves up to the next higher bracket
The losers from Week 1 play. The loser (Week 2) moves down to the next lower bracket

The team that wins both its matches over the 2 week cycle will move up to the next 4 team bracket

The 2 teams that split their matches (i.e. one win and one loss) over the 2 week cycle will remain in the same bracket (and will be joined by 2 new teams)

The team that loses both its matches over the 2 week cycle will drop down to the next 4 team bracket

Detailed Explanation

At the beginning of each 2 week cycle, each Division is broken down into groups of 4 teams.

Week 1

Team 1 plays Team 2
Team 3 plays Team 4

The winner of Team 1 versus Team 2 becomes Team 1 (note that if Team 1 wins they remain Team 1)
The loser of Team 1 versus Team 2 becomes Team 3

The winner of Team 3 versus Team 4 becomes Team 2
The loser of Team 3 versus Team 4 becomes Team 4 (note that if Team 4 loses they remain Team 4)

Week 2

Team 1 plays Team 2
Team 3 plays Team 4

The winner of Team 1 versus Team 2 moves up to become Team 4 in the next "bracket" (or Tier) of 4 teams
The loser of Team 1 versus Team 2 drops down to become Team 3 in the "bracket"
The winner of Team 3 versus Team 4 moves up to become Team 2 in the "bracket"
The loser of Team 3 versus Team 4 drops down to become Team 1 in the new "bracket" (or Tier) of 4 teams

In summary:

Every 2nd week, the teams in positions 1 and 4 of the 4 team bracket HOLD their positions to allow them to play either the winning team from the bottom "rung" of the bracket or the losing team from the top "rung" of the bracket, thereby eliminating the creation of two separate "streams" of teams.

Example using the ladder system

The four team group going into the first week of the 2 week rotation is ranked as follows:

Team 1 = Sky Smashers
Team 2 = Spikers
Team 3 = Hang Time
Team 4 = Volley This

The Week 1 schedule is as follows:

Team Location Court Time Duties
Sky Smashers Cité Collégiale27:20 Setup
Spikers
Hang Time Cité Collégiale29:10 Takedown
Volley This

The Week 1 results are as follows:

Sky Smashers defeats Spikers
Volley This defeats Hang Time

The following week's rankings (Week 2 Schedule) becomes:

Team Location Court Time Duties
Sky Smashers Cité Collégiale29:10 Takedown note: they maintain their # 1 position in the bracket
Volley This   note: they move up to position 2 in the grouping
Spikers Cité Collégiale27:20 Setup note: they move down to position 3 in the grouping
Hang Time   note: they move down to position 4 in the grouping

The Week 2 results are as follows:

Sky Smashers defeats Volley This (Sky Smashers therefore moves up to the next 4 team bracket)
Spikers defeats Hang Time (Hang Time therefore moves down into the next 4 team bracket)

The revised rankings for the following week (Week 3 in this example) are:

Team Location Court Time Duties
Losing team from Week 2 bottom rung losers game in grouping above Cité Collégiale27:20 Setup Sky Smashers have moved up one bracket to the next grouping
Spikers
Volley This Cité Collégiale29:10 Takedown
Winning team from Week 2 top rung winners game in grouping below   Hang Time has moved down one bracket to the next grouping
