The OCVL is a league built on teams. By that we mean that registration is done by team and not by individual player (i.e. you need to join a team first and then have that team register in order to gain entry to the league -- you cannot just sign up as an individual and expect to be added to a team). Accordingly, individuals who are new to Ottawa and/or the OCVL and are looking to join a team, may find it challenging if they do not know anyone in region. As for team captains, similar challenges exist when they are recruiting players to build their teams. Thus the following information will is being provided to help you overcome these challenges. Firstly, if you are new to Ottawa or the OCVL and you wish to join a team, you may add yourself to our spares list. To do so you will need to create an OCVL account which can be done by following the instructions when you click on “players area” at www.ocvl.com. The spares list can only be viewed by team captains and assistant captains looking to add players to their teams. Please note that the spares list will be purged once team registration opens (August); thus if you added you name to that list before then, you will have to login again after registration opens and add yourself once again to the spares list. Unfortunately,
registering as a spare does not allow a player to do any active searching for
a team; it is also a limited recruiting tool for team captains. Hence,
there is a second
option: Facebook! www.Facebook.com is a relatively new approach to OCVL team building. It was introduced in the 2007-2008 season and proved to be quite useful in uniting many teams and players. To use this service, one must go to Facebook.com and create their own personal account -- it's free! However, before proceeding, please read the following:
Now, should you decide to proceed with Facebook, go to the group called “OCVL Player and Team Networking”. There you will find messages posted on the "wall" for both "players looking for teams" and "teams looking for players". You may choose to add your own message post to the wall or reply/contact one of the messages already posted. Hence,
if you are a player looking for a team, be sure to include the position you play (e.g. setter, middle, power, offside, libero) your past experience (e.g. high school, university intramural, university varsity, OCVL, club teams) and at what level
(Tier 1,2,3,etc..) and in which division(s) (Men’s, Women’s, or Mixed) you wish to play. Similarly, if you are a team captain, specify, what position and level of player you are looking for. Finally for those of you who find it difficult to navigate through Facebook, ask someone born after 1986 to help you out! :) To go to FACEBOOK.com,
