OCVL OVERVIEW |
|
Hello and welcome to the Ottawa Competitive
Volleyball League (OCVL). Below you will find a brief overview of the OCVL and it’s registration process. OVERVIEW For those of you who are new to the OCVL, our season typically begins in September and wraps up in April of the following year, with finals and an end of season awards banquet and gala. The regular season is 22 weeks long with an additional 3 weeks for playoffs. The league operates in gyms throughout the region,
and runs on three separate nights: the Men's Division
is played on Monday nights, the Women's Division on Tuesday nights, and the Mixed Division on Thursday nights. Teams must have 6 registered players on the court at all times which, in the Mixed Division,
this consists of three men and three women or two men and four women. Our unique "league by night" format allows the OCVL to operate in a tier or ladder format (i.e. you win and you move up the ladder, or you lose and you move down the ladder). Thus, with minor exceptions, the night you play will remain the same throughout the season, but depending on your success (or lack thereof), where you play may change every couple of weeks. The tier format also ensures that, for the most part, your team will be facing other teams whose level of play is similar to yours. Ultimately, each night a team will play 1 match, in a best of 5 game format. All regular season and play-off matches are refereed by Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) officials. How are team rankings determined at the beginning of the season? Some returning teams will be assigned a position on the ladder based on how the team finished the previous year. Other returning teams as well as new teams, will be placed on the ladder based on their performance at a qualifying tournament to be held in September. Online Registration Registration is done “by team” which means that you must be part of a team in order to play in the OCVL. Registration will begin in mid-August 2007; actual date to be announced. Once registration is officially open, a player can create a team and have other team members sign up. Payments for league fees are also done online. The Internet is the OCVL's main communication and administration tool. All persons who wish to play in the league must register and create an account with the OCVL; to do this please go to the “players area” at www.ocvl.com. Please do not create multiple accounts; if you have played in the OCVL before but forgot your OCVL account login information, you can either have the website e-mail it to you automatically or you may send an e-mail to john@ocvl.com to obtain your login information. Individual Players If you are new to Ottawa or the OCVL and you wish to join a team, you may add yourself to our spares list. To do so you will need to create an OCVL account which can be done at the “players area” at www.ocvl.com. The spares list will be viewed by team captains and assistant captains looking to add players to their teams. Please note that the spares list will be purged once registration opens, thus if your name is currently on that list, you will have to login after registration opens and add yourself once again. Another practical option for player and team networking is the Facebook.com option. A special group for OCVL players has been created on the Facebook.com website to facilitate team and player networking. Click here for more information.
